Beds Throughout History

Just like any item the bed has a very interesting history too. The bed may just seem to you like ordinary rectangular foam that provides you comfort, but the bed has been around for a long time and has a pretty neat history as well.

• Neolithic people started to sleep on primitive beds 10,000 years ago.
• During the 3400 B.C., people who were far richer started to get beds that were more complex than the ordinary people. It was the Egyptian’s King Tut who had a bed made of ebony and gold. While common people had to sleep on palm leaves only.
• The first luxury bed was created in the Roman Empire, it was often decorated with gold, silver, bronze, and had mattresses that were stuffed with reeds, feathers, hay or wool.
• It was also the Romans who discovered the water bed. Although their water bed is not like ours. The person will recline into warm water. When he becomes drowsy he is lifted to a near by cradle where he is rocked to sleep.
• The renaissance period gave way to a very artistic kind of mattress. Their mattresses will be stuffed with feathers, pea shucks or straw, and it is then covered lavishly in silk, brocades and velvets.
• During the 16th to 17th century, the mattresses became cheaper. They were now only stuffed with straw that is placed atop a structure of rope that is crisscrossed.
• It was during the late 18th century that cast iron mattresses and cotton mattresses arrived. This kind of bed was developed during this time to prevent bugs from the straws.
• The first coil spring used in beds was formed in 1865
• Innerspring mattresses and upholstered mattresses became serious contenders in America and in Canada during the 1930’s.
• Futons arrived during the 1940’s.
• Pillows and mattresses that were made of foam appeared on the market during the 1950’s.
• The modern water bed was introduced and the adjustable beds became popular during the 1960’s.
• Airbeds were introduced to the market during the 1980’s.
• Spacious sleeping becomes the demand of the market of sleepers, as queen size bed demand rises during the 1990’s.
• High tech beds are now the trend in the 2000’s. They look for the best ways to provide comfort.

The bed probably started out as a small rock where the cavemen slept and look at where we ended up now. Maybe a few centuries more the bed will now be able to make you sleep by cradling you or singing stuff to you. The only bed I dream about having is a bed that can make me sleep for the very second I lie down.
