A disabled person’s independence is reinforced because of the many assistive devices available today. These devices assist in performing activities of daily living with little to no help from another person. The adjustable bed is one of those devices. So, what is an adjustable bed for the disabled?

The adjustable bed does exactly what it’s called - it adjusts to your needs and comfort. This type of bed can move its different parts. As opposed to the flat bed, this type of bed can move up the head and the leg halves from both ends. Some types can rise up from three parts. The head end, the part that cradles the back of the knees and the leg end. These movements allow for access and comfort to the user.

One of the most important questions that one asks when choosing an adjustable bed is, “Is it safe?” Now, some beds have wheels so that it can be moved around with ease. But more importantly, there are breaks to these wheels so one doesn’t have to worry about it rolling away when one is transferring to and from the bed. The movement of its parts is controlled by pressing a button, and more recently, electronic types have made that function very convenient.

Another question one asks is, “Is it easy to get in and out of it?” The adjustable bed is accessible in several ways. One, it has a “riser” function. One can adjust the height of the bed by the push of a button. It can vertically rise up so one won’t need to bend so low to get on it and risk injury in the process. And it can also go down so a person in a wheelchair is able to transfer from the chair to the bed at even heights.

The grab rails and side rails are added features that promote safety and access. One can use the grab rails to transfer from a wheelchair to the adjustable bed. These grab rails are also securely set in place so one can lean on them without fear of it moving. The side rails can be secured at the sides of the bed so one doesn’t accidentally fall from the bed in the middle of the night. These rails can also slide under the bed if they’re not needed.

The adjustable bed for the disabled has allowed independence in the bedroom in the same way that a wheelchair or a walker promotes mobility in the outside world. A disabled person need not be handicapped by physical limitations. Assistive devices, like the adjustable bed, alleviate one’s handicaps. They are safe and make for a wonderful addition to the home.
