Caring for Your Mattress

Posted on October 22nd, 2007 in Mattresses by admin

A new mattress and foundation should be considered as a sleeping equipment that needs proper care to ensure the best hygiene and performance.  Because of the great variations in mattress products, following the instructions of mattress manufacturers is extremely important.  In general, knowledge of the following is important:

• Proper installation Proper installation of the mattress and foundation in the home should be ensured.  The new sleeping equipment can be damaged by improper installation. Ask the store personnel for some tips in self-transport and installation to avoid the problem.

• Use a protective pad. To maintain the freshness and stain-free of the mattress, it is advisable to have a good quality, washable mattress pad (and for the foundation as well, if you like).

• Let it breathe. Leaving the mattress and foundation bare and fresh for a few hours for a breath of fresh air can be good to remove slightly detected “new product” odor.

• Give it good support. A sturdy bed frame should be used.  A queen or king size set should have a frame to adequately support the center to prevent distortion or breakage.

• Don’t dry clean. The fabric or underlying materials of the mattress can be harmed by dry cleaning chemicals and spot removers.  Using vacuum cleaners is the only cleaning method recommended.  Applying mild soap with cold water can be used to remove stains.  Avoid soaking a mattress or foundation.

• Don’t remove the tag. Removing the law tag is not unlawful contrary to what many people popularly believe.  Any information on label will provide a means of identification for claiming service or product warranties.

• It’s not a trampoline. Allowing the kids to jump on the mattress set is not recommended.  The interior construction of the mattress can be damaged by the children’s rough-housing and they can also hurt themselves.

• No boards, please. Putting a board between the mattress and foundation should be avoided.  The sense of support may be enhanced for a while, but over time the problem may also be worsened.  Immediately get rid of the board, when any bed in your home has reached that stage.

• Out with the old. With your new sleeping set firmly put in place, removing and disposing of your old mattress should be the next thing in your mind.  Transferring or giving it to other people should be discouraged.  You were dissatisfied with it so it will also dissatisfy other people.  Get rid of it.
